According the NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Houston Texans and starting linebacker Henry To'oTo'o just agreed on a two-year, $16 million contract extension. The decision now keeps the former Alabama Crimson Tide defender in Houston through the 2028 season at a minimum.
It's a somewhat polarizing decision, as many in Houston's fan base have had their qualms about To'oTo'o as a long-term option at the position, considering his struggles throughout last season with coverage assignments and securing essential tackles in high-leverage situations.
The former 2023 fifth-rounder confirmed as much just yesterday in a post-training camp press conference, where he openly expressed to the media how much his low moments -- against teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Las Vegas Raiders specifically -- weighed on his mentality during different portions of the campaign. However, To'oTo'o confidently proclaimed that those struggles helped to shape him as a player and as a man, and how those memories will be instrumental to his potential in the future.
If To'oTo'o can validate his emphatic stance with some acceleration in his growth this season, his new deal could turn into one of the biggest bargains the NFL. And in doing so, demonstrate to skeptics that Houston made the right decision by locking up the California-native for the foreseeable future.
Henry To'oTo'o can prove his value with stellar performance in 2026
Through three seasons in the NFL, To'oTo'o has racked up stats of:
- 47 Games played
- 261 Total tackles (131 solo, 130 assist)
- Four sacks
- Two forced fumbles (two recovered)
- One interception
- Nine passes defended
Then, as recently as last season, To'oTo'o actually had the fourth-highest quarterback pressure rate in the NFL amongst 123 qualified linebackers with 37.8% (according to NFL Next Gen Stats). So, while some fans have been concerned about his ability to stick with running backs in coverage and/or mobile quarterbacks who break containment, the reality is To'oTo'o has been a net positive for the Texans in terms of being a consistently disruptive presence near the line of scrimmage.
At this point, it'll be all about To'oTo'o growing as a player in the technical aspects of the position. Alongside Pro Bowler Azeez Al-Shaair, To'oTo'o now has a golden opportunity to form one of the most effective linebacking tandems in the NFL.
The Texans seem more-than-comfortable to invest in To'oTo'o long-term, and he seems like he wants to be the best version of himself for the franchise who drafted him. If that happens, he'll be able to silence his skeptics in short order.
