Speaking to ABC 13's Greg Bailey, Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans gave a direct statement on how his quarterback in C.J. Stroud can "take the next step" as the franchise signal caller for the team. He firmly expressed,
“The work is the work. Now it comes to live action, how’s your decision making. That’s where I want to see him take the next step. He’s done these things, now it’s just about the consistency at which you do it. Every single time no matter, September, to January, can you continue to be consistent & that’s what matters most.”
This is arguably as transparent as Ryans has been about the trajectory of Stroud during the offseason, as much speculation has still hovered around the team regarding a potential contract extension for the 24-year-old this Summer.
As the head coach, Ryans has had a front row seat to the quality of leadership traits that Stroud has displayed since his arrival out of Ohio State in 2023 (that being both on the field and off of the field). While Stroud certainly electrified the NFL during his now-legendary rookie season, his struggles to follow up on that campaign has led to many to believe that we've already seen the best of what the California-native has to offer. However, Stroud has shown more than enough in the interim to suggest that his best ball is still within his grasp heading into a pivotal 2026 season.

In spite of chronically poor offensive line play, the absence of a true rushing attack, multiple rookie playcallers and major injuries to key skill position players, Stroud has helped lead the Texans to three consecutive AFC playoff berths. However, concerns with his on-field morale, situational decision making, mitigation of potential disasters and overall skill progression has create a firestorm of skepticism around the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year.
The volatile nature of his perception took a definitive turn after the 2025 playoffs, as Stroud had his worst stretch of quarterback play in his career against both the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots. Since then, the main narrative about Stroud has been whether or not the Texans will be looking elsewhere for help at quarterback after the upcoming season.
Except, Ryans, general manager Nick Caserio, his teammates and large sections of the fan base still believe that Stroud has demonstrated enough production to warrant confidence in the young signal caller for the immediate future and beyond. Statements like what Ryans gave to Bailey show a coach who's seen excellence from Stroud, but also understands that the young player needs to maintain a consistently positive trajectory in order for the team to truly elevate to legitimate Super Bowl contender status.
As it relates to a contract extension, Caserio even mentioned how Stroud and the team have had "positive" interactions about a possible deal in the lead-up to Houston's 25th anniversary season. All things considered, there's no real reason to believe that the team is looking to part ways with Stroud anytime soon. Regardless of outsider commentaries, the team has publicly maintained a commitment to Stroud as the long-term answer at the position.
Their confidence can be rewarded as soon as September 13th arrives, as the Texans will be playing their home opener against the Buffalo Bills. Stroud can truly launch into a reputation reclamation campaign with a strong enough start in that contest.
