These are all the notable cuts for the Texans that have been reported so far.
Justin Watson, wide receiver
This move is somewhat surprising, considering he's one of the most experienced players at the position, along with the need for quality depth that's been generated by the injury concerns of both Jayden Higgins (torn ACL) and Tank Dell (recovery from ruptured knee). However, it does indicate an increased likelihood that both Lewis Bond and Jared Wayne will make the final 53-man roster.
George Odum, safety
The two-time All-Pro (2020, 2022) and special teams ace may have gotten released today, but reports indicate that the team is interested in bringing him back via the practice squad. Special teams coordinator Frank Ross wants as many effective weapons in his unit that he can get, and Odum fits that bill in spades.
Josh Kelly, wide receiver
Kelly certainly made an impression on the coaching staff with his opportunities throughout training camp and the preseason. He flashed in spots as a productive chain mover, and he has earned enough equity with the team to where they want him back on their practice squad.
Jamal Hill, linebacker
In a bit of a shocker, the Texans have now officially waived a fan favorite in Hill, who's a third-year linebacker who some believed could've produced quality reps as a depth piece at his position. With his departure, that means there's a greater chance that both Wade Woodaz and Aiden Fisher could make the 53-man roster as a rookie tandem.
Noah Whittington, running back
One of my personal selections, Whittington has now been officially released by the team. Even though he showed some positive upside in handling reps in the preseason, Jawhar Jordan's previous success in the regular season last year, along with his hyper productivity in training camp, most likely gave him the edge in the RB3 competition.
Naquan Jones, defensive tackle
Jones has been a productive player since joining Houston off of waivers late last season, and many in the fan base believed that he'd earned his way into a quality depth role at defensive tackle. There's a decent chance that Jones gets a decent look elsewhere.
Brevin Jordan, tight end
Jordan's departure is notable only because of how much potential he flashed in 2023 as an athletic option at the position in 2023. Other than that, Jordan has missed the last two seasons with season-ending knee injuries, as well as being absent for training camp this offseason due to a knee injury. For some, this move was long overdue.
Lewis Bond, wide receiver
Arguably the biggest shocker of the Texans' cutdown decisions, Bond had won over a large portion of the fan base with his perceived excellence throughout training camp. However, his lack of true impact in the preseason probably hurt him, as well as the emergence of a fellow roster-bubble mate in Jared Wayne. If another team finds enough value in Bond, don't be shocked if he still finds a way to suit up early on in the regular season.
Jawhar Jordan, running back
Next to Bond getting cut, Jordan has to be within the top-three of most shocking for this cycle. He was a standout in training camp, and his 100-yard performance against the Arizona Cardainals last season definitely bought him some credibility with the fanbase. Unfortunately, those two factors just weren't enough to push him across the final finish line.
