CJ Stroud is showing signs that his 2026 resurgence could be real

The Texans have yet to win a preseason game, but starting quarterback CJ Stroud looked comfortable in his debut. Many of Houston's starters played in the first drive, and the result gives reason for optimism.

The Houston Texans may have lost their second preseason game to the Las Vegas Raiders (22-20), but quarterback CJ Stroud can consider his performance a win. Since he didn't play in the first preseason game last week, it would've been understandable to see a little dust get shaken off. Nonetheless, Stroud looked to be in mid-season form.

The fourth-year quarterback was joined by several starters on the Texans' opening drive, and he commanded the offense well. The box score might not jump off the page (or screen), but I'm going to tell you why it was promising.

CJ Stroud shows positive signs in 'smooth' preseason debut

On the opening drive, Stroud had the luxury of (what could be) the starting offensive line playing in front of him: Evan Brown, Trent Brown, Aireontae Ersery, Ed Ingram and Keylan Rutledge. Stroud went 4-of-6 for 27 yards on the possession, including two third-down conversions. It was also the first time Stroud was hearing new offensive coordinator Nick Caley in his ear in a game setting.

Everything went according to plan, as the drive ended with a 20-yard touchdown run from running back Woody Marks. Stroud said everything about the drive felt good.

“I liked our pace in and out the huddle," Stroud said after the game. "I liked the calls ‘Cales’ made. I liked the guys I was out there with. It was smooth. I had a good time. It's always fun playing. It was really fun to play.”

Of course, it helps to be playing in front of a starting caliber offensive line. Stroud said the middle of the line has taken a step forward in particular.

“I love how tough they are and how demanding they are—their ability to communicate—of course, their blocking ability; I think they're both doing a great job," Stroud said. "I think Jake (Andrews) is doing amazing, too. I think we have made strides in the interior part of our offensive line.”

Running back David Montgomery hasn't made an appearance this preseason, but his backfield partner, Marks, has made an impact. If both backs can produce, it could do wonders for the effectiveness of the passing game. Stroud said Marks has improved as an all-around player.

“I thought he looked great. He's been amazing in practice and taking strides," Stroud said. "I’m just proud of him not even only in the running game, but in pass protection, as well. I thought he did a great job.”

With a strong offensive line and a productive backfield, Stroud could be in for his best season as a pro. Paired with the best defense in the league, the Texans should be among the last teams standing come wintertime.
