According to KPRC 2 Texans Insider Aaron Wilson, the team plans to play quarterback C.J. Stroud in "a few series" tonight against the Las Vegas Raiders. In a post on his official X account about two hours ago, he holistically explained,

"Quarterback C.J. Stroud set to play a few series tonight vs. #Raiders, along with first-team offensive line, including guard-center Keylan Rutledge and running back Woody Marks, per league source. Twenty to 25 plays, roughly. Texans defensive starters expected to be rested. Offensive line evaluation continues as team searches for top five guys heading into #Bills season opener."

While stability across the offensive line will definitely be a storyline as well tonight, what's firmly understood is that Stroud will be present for a considerable portion of the contest, which will allow for fans and local media to finally get a first-look at some of the results of his offseason work.

After watching the likes of Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Fernando Mendoza and several others have varying levels of success against mostly depth players on opponent defenses, it's more than feasible to have an expectation that Stroud should do the same. Specifically, I actually three look-for's in particular that I have highlighted as a priority for Stroud's 2026 preseason debut tonight.

3 keys for C.J. Stroud in his 2026 preseason debut for the Houston Texans

Pre-snap operation must be clean

One of the biggest compliments that Stroud has received from around Reliant Stadium this offseason has been the improvement in his pre-snap operation of the offense. That's a great development, as penalties, protection mishaps and play design disorder plagued the unit all throughout 2025. Against the Raiders, I'm looking for time efficiency from the huddle to the line of scrimmage, and that while minimizing infractions that would cost the offense much-needed yards.

Time to throw helping the offensive line

Last season, Stroud averaged 2.82 in time to throw, which was tied for 17th in the NFL (with Jaxson Dart and Dak Prescott). While much of that has to do with the effective of both one's offensive line and receiver corps., a large piece of that is also pre-snap diagnosis and trusting the game plan post-snap. Stroud has been known to sometimes hold the football for too long in efforts to extend plays and create opportunities for chunk yardage downfield.

While it had led to some truly breathtaking moments that have favored Houston on multiple occasions, it's also led to untimely turnovers, unforced sacks and stalled out drives that were otherwise smooth in the plays prior to. Sometimes it's good to just take what the defense gives in quick fasion, which also includes throwing the ball away if a play is simply not there to be made. That should be apparent for Stroud--when necessary--tonight against the Raiders.

Using his full array of weapons

In week eight's 26-15 victory against the San Francisco 49ers last season, Stroud had arguably his best offensive day of the year as a passer. Being without Pro Bowler Nico Collins, Stroud lit up San Francisco's defense to the tune of highlighting nine different pass catchers. This included seven of which having at least 20 receiving yards, and both Xavier Hutchinson and Jayden Higgins each having a touchdown reception on the day.

This year, Stroud and the offense will be without a projected breakout star in Higgins, as he was lost to a torn ACL this week in joint practice with the Raiders. As a result, he'll have to replicate some level of that effectiveness throughout the campaign now that he won't have Higgins' 6-foot-4 fram to utilize in the passing attack. His adjustment period starts tonight in his preseason debut, as he'll have plenty of opportunities to feature a plethora of weapons who are also hungry to demonstrate their value to the team.
