The Houston Texans drafted a defensive lineman in the fifth round, their first pick on Day 3 of the 2019 NFL Draft.

The selection the Houston Texans made with the 161st overall pick in the fifth round is one that can provide huge dividends in the future for the franchise, as they selected defensive lineman Charles Omenihu from the University of Texas.

Having a pre-draft projection of Rounds 4-5, the Texans got a good value with this selection, and Omenihu be a nice addition to the Texans’ defensive front rotation. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com had this to say of the newest defensive lineman drafted by the Texans:

"“Omenihu steps off the bus with a physique that says NFL defensive end, but his skill-set and football acumen are still very raw.”"

Omenihu should do well with the Texans, and for them to gain him in the fifth round is outstanding. He won’t have to be the star right off the bat, but Omenihu will be able to learn around the likes of J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney on defense which is perfect way for a rookie to start their career.

This past season at Texas saw Omenihu play in 14 games where he collected 45 tackles (33 solo), and even more impressive he totaled 18 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. For his four-year career, Omenihu had 115 tackles (85 solo) with 30 tackles for loss and 16.5 sacks.

Omenihu will take some work because being a rookie defensive end in the NFL isn’t easy, but being a fifth round selection, the expectations to be the best defensive end of the team won’t be there either.

Omenihu is in a good situation for a rookie. He should be able to produce, but he’s going to be able to have the time to learn on the go with veterans around him on a defensive front that played well in 2018. Fans should be excited for the arrival of Omenihu and it will be fun to watch how his career progresses in year one.
