While the Houston Texans' defense as a whole collapsed on Sunday afternoon against the visiting Buffalo Bills, newly-signed safety Reed Blankenship's play stood out from the rest (in the worst way).
It wasn't a banner year for any member of Houston's secondary yesterday afternoon, but Blankenship --being one of Houston's marquee additions in the offseason--was supposed to contribute a level of stability, IQ and Super Bowl pedigree to these kinds of situations when if things were to break down. Unfortunately for Blankenship and the Texans, his play was instrumental in why Bills quarterback Josh Allen and his offense was able to eclipse over 300 yards of passing production, which included a combined 230 receiving yards between Bills tight end Dalton Kinkaid and wide receiver D.J. Moore.
The eye-test was one thing, but a closer look at the advanced stats show an even more troubling trajectory for the former Philadelphia Eagle and his viability in Houston's secondary moving forward.
Reed Blankenship's play helped to sink the Houston Texans on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills
According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Blankenship graded out as arguably one of the five-worst defensive backs throughout the entire Sunday slate of NFL games yesterday afternoon.
In 28 coverage snaps yesterday, Blankeship was tagged for:
- 6 receptions (on 6 targets) (T-6th most)
- 100% catch rate (T-worst)
- 118 yards allowed (3rd-most)
- 1 TD (T-5th most)
- A 158.3 passer rating (T-worst)
The best representation of how poorly Blankenship played was arguably on his missed interception attempt of Allen with about 1:30 left in the second quarter. With the Texans down 17-14, and the Bills facing 1st & 10 from around the Houston 43-yard line, Allen zipped a pass to Moore at a time where Blankenship actually made a great break on the route. Unfortunately, Blankenship gambled and attempted to grab the football out of the air instead of securing the receiver, which led to Moore being able to handle an unabated catch-and-run to complete the touchdown pass.
With the advanced statistics now furthering the extent Blankenships' damaging defensive play on the afternoon, one now naturally could start to wonder what's next regarding Houston's three-year, $24.75 million investment?
What's next for Reed Blankenship and the Houston Texans heading into week two?
The Texans now turn their attention to Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and his tandem of prolific pass catchers in wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins ahead of their week two matchup from Reliant Stadium. While I don't believe Houston's defense as a whole will come out lethargic like they did against the Bills, specific deep-dives like this do make me ponder what could be on the horizon for Blankenship specifically.
WIth the presumed level of urgency that a potential Super Bowl season would create amongst the organization, would it be outside of the realm of possibility that we could see a quick hook of Blankenship in week two if things continue to spiral on his watch (especially with an option like rookie Kamari Ramsey waiting on the sidelines for more reps)?
Keep in mind, the Texans ended up cutting last year's "big-name" safety acquisition in C.J. Gardner-Johnson after only three games after a dismal start to their season in 2025 (even though there were also behind-the-scenes reasons for his departure as well). Am I saying that the two are exactly the same? No. However, head coach DeMeco Ryans and co. have at least shown a willingness to make whatever adjustments they deem necessary to facilitate that kind of defensive changes that they believe the team would need the most.
The jury is out for the moment on the matter. However, don't be surprised if this talking point is revisited with another stinker of a performance like we saw yesterday afternoon.
