With Sunday’s season-opener against the Los Angeles Rams quickly approaching, the Houston Texans announced the addition of three players to their practice squad on Wednesday.

They could see some time on the field on Sunday based on the latest reports regarding the injury report, so this would be the first time we see just how good the practice squad additions could be.

The Texans announced that veteran wide receivers Christian Kirk and Braxton Berrios sat out practice on Wednesday and Thursday with hamstring injuries. Kirk (Jaguars) and Berrios (Dolphins) were both acquired by Houston this offseason.

If neither Kirk nor Berrios can go, expect a heavy workload for Texans’ rookies Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel, and maybe even some from their practice squad. Fortunately for now, the worst-case scenario can be avoided, even if there is some solid talent within the group.

The Texans' practice squad has some solid talent with latest additions

Rookie wide receiver Silas Bolden, guard Sidy Sow, and cornerback D’Angelo Ross were signed to the team’s 17-man practice squad. In corresponding moves, linebacker K.C. Ossai and tackles Reid Holskey and Jaylon Thomas were released from the practice squad.

A 5-foot-8, 160-pound wideout from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Bolden was a part of Oregon State’s 2020 recruiting class. He played four seasons with the Beavers before transferring to Texas in 2024. Last season with the Longhorns, he saw action in 15 games and compiled 22 receptions for 243 yards and a touchdown.

Bolden was also the team’s starting punt returner and averaged 10.7 yards per return, which included a 75-yard punt returned for a touchdown in the Peach Bowl against Arizona State. He originally signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent but was waived as part of the Vikings’ initial roster cuts on August 24.

Sow, a guard out of Quebec, played his college ball at Eastern Michigan and was a fourth-round selection by the New England Patriots in the 2023 NFL Draft. He has played in 27 games with the Patriots over the last two seasons, starting 14 of them.

After stints with the Patriots and Miami Dolphins, Houston originally signed Ross to the practice squad in November 2022. The 28-year-old cornerback has appeared in 23 games with the Texans over the last two seasons, starting two of them.

In the Texans’ wild-card victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in January, Ross returned a blocked extra point for a defensive two-point conversion. It marked the first time such a play occurred in the playoffs since the rule was implemented 10 years prior.

Kirk was listed as one of three starting wideouts on the team’s unofficial depth chart released on Tuesday. Berrios was listed as the team’s starting punt returner. Keep an eye on their status throughout the week.

Houston must release their final injury report for Sunday’s game by 4 p.m. ET on Saturday.
