The Houston Texans have completed several recent transactions to bolster the backend of their roster after some untimely injuries to would-be contributors.
To review, examples of key players who've been injured recently are:
- Brevin Jordan, tight end: knee
- Jake Hansen, linebacker: ankle, foot
- Jawhar Jordan, running back: hamstring
- Collin Wright, cornerback: soft-tissue injury
- Graham Mertz, quarterback: torn ACL
- British Brooks, running back/fullback: Broken hand
As a result of the mounting ailments, general manager Nick Caserio and co. have ventured to restock the roster supply in order to avoid having gaping holes at positions of potential need down the line. Here are three of the most telling signings for the franchise ahead of their Thursday night matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders this week.
The Houston Texans have signed several players in response to key injuries
August 16th, 2026: Texans sign cornerback Bryce Hall
Verdict: Yesterday, Houston signed former New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Bryce Hall as a supposed alternate option to breakout rookie Collin Wright. As a 2020 fifth-rounder out of Virginia who's made a play or two in the secondary, Houston can potentially have a solution at CB4 if he makes an immediate impact under the tutelage of secondary coach Dino Vasso over the next two weeks.
August 16th, 2026: Texans sign tight end Louis Hansen
Verdict: As tight end Brevin Jordan is recovering from a lingering knee injury, there's a need for more depth at the position with only about three weeks left until the regular season. With Hansen being an undrafted free agent this year, it's not like he'll be looked at to really contend for legitimate reps in the near future. However, having as many healthy bodies as possible will help fill out the roster in the meantime while the coaching staff figures out what to do behind Dalton Schultz, Marlin Klein , Foster Moreau and Cade Stover.
August 15th, 2026: Texans sign quarterback Brett Rypien
Verdict: After third-string quarterback Graham Mertz tore his ACL in the first preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston opted to sign quarterback Brett Rypien to be his replacement. The signing signaled a commitment to the scheme, as Rypien and offensive coordinator have history dating back to their time spent together with the Los Angeles Rams in the 2023 season.
Rypien's arrival is also seen as an upgrade in a way, as he's actually been credited with 11 games of NFL experience, which includes a 2-2 record in four NFL starts (even though wins aren't entirely a quarterback stat). Meanwhile, Mertz has yet to touch the field during a live regular season game.
