After one of the most hotly contested contract debates in recent Houston Texans memory, we finally have been given clarity on where things stand between quarterback C.J. Stroud and the team. Simply put, both sides have agreed to table negotiations until after the 2026 season.

While many see this as a win-win for both sides, the reality is that Stroud is taking a massive gamble by betting on himself long-term as opposed to taking the immediate financial security. What's not debatable is the fact that both sides seemingly want to continue working with one another for the foreseeable future, as stated by Bleacher Report NFL Insider James Palmer via his official X account after the news broke. He stated,

"It felt this was going to be the most likely outcome from everything I gathered. Stroud has been prepared for some time to play this season out. Both sides want to get something done. The texans view Stroud as their franchise QB moving forward. Include Stroud in a very talented QB group that is slated to drastically change the QB market this offseason."

Now that this domino has finally fallen in the contract proceedings, the spotlight is now turned up even more on Stroud's performance in 2026. To his credit, the former second-overall selection seems primed to prove to the NFL world that his play will be nothing worry about as the season progresses. And with that, the market for his services will only grow as time goes on.

C.J. Stroud is primed to prove his value to the Houston Texans throughout 2026

This week, in response to a question about the effectiveness of his offseason preparation, Stroud had this to say to the media,

"Yeah, I'm very excited. You put in the work just to give yourself a chance. Then, you gotta go out there and perform. So, I'm excited to go out there with my guys and show the world what we've been working on."

On a side note, for those who've been paying attention to Stroud's demeanor at the podium as of late, there's seemingly been a shift from his approach in year's past. In previous seasons, Stroud's energy has been known to be much lighter in tone. This year, Stroud has seemed more direct, focused and committed to sticking to the most efficient answers wen prompted with a variety of questions pertaining to his on-field business.

Even when it came to--once again--fielding questions about the potential of him getting a new deal before the beginning of the regular season, Stroud gave a brief yet impactful answer of,

"Focus on football. Let my team and my agent handle that. My job is to play football, and that's what I'll do."

Circling back to the main point, everything from Stroud's reponses, to his physical changes (weight, haircut) and even his increased ownership of the schematic of the offense over the Summer is signaling to me that Stroud is firmly set to showcase a level of greatness that many have yearned for since his now legendary 2023 rookie season.

At his best, I believe that Stroud is one of the 10 best passers in the league, full stop. If he's truly on a course to reclaim his reputation and even exceed the successes of his past, we're easily talking about a player who's capable of setting the market in the 2027 offseason. My money's on Stroud to make that happen, and I believe that his preparation will ensure that it happens.
