News continues pouring out from the Houston Texans out of the historic Harrow School, which is the alma mater of Winston Churchill (where the squad practiced after landing in London). In this case, they're yet more roster updates for the team with less than 18 hours before their week six face off against their AFC South opponents in the Jacksonville Jaguars.
We already knew that starting linebacker Henry To'oTo'o was on his way back into the lineup after recovering from an injured shoulder. Now, we have official confirmation on Houston's plans at running back after David Montgomery's declared absence, as well as the release of a couple of notable rookies that many fans thought would be some level of an impact with the right circumstances.
Several Houston Texans roster moves ahead of their week six match up versus the Jacksonville Jaguars
To best explain the set of moves, they'll be categorized based on transaction type:
Activated to the 53-man roster
- Henry To'oTo'o, linebacker
- Ja'Marcus Ingram, safety
Elevated from the practice squad
- Jawhar Jordan, running back
- Bryce Hall, cornerback
Players waived from the team
- Aiden Fisher, linebacker
- Collin Wright, cornerback
While it's definitely a plus to have names like To'oTo'o, Ingram, Hall and the returning Jordan available for the team, it's unfortunate that it came at the expense of the likes of Fisher and Wright, who some in the fan base thought highly of during the offseason.
Aiden Fisher
For starters, Fisher was selected by the Texans in the seventh round of this past draft out of Indiana University, who was fresh off of winning a college national championship against the University of Miami. The highly decorated 6-foot-1, 231-pound former Hoosier linebacker helped lead his defense—and his team as a whole—to the school's first championship in its over 120-plus-year history.
With multiple injuries to key linebackers like Azeez Al-Shaair and To'oTo'o, there seemed to be a path for Fisher to slot in for a couple of reps in the interim while the team figured out the best course of action. However, instead of opting for Fisher, Houston went with experienced veterans like Jake Hansen, Kenneth Murrayand even fellow rookie Wade Woodaz. And now, Fisher finds himself on the outside looking in (even though some already believe that Houston is hoping to re-sign him to the practice squad if/when he clears waivers).
Collin Wright
Wright is an especially surprising case, as he experienced a meteoric rise out of training camp. He came recommended highly by many prominent voices from around the team after making several impact plays during the offseason ramp up period.
However, the former Stanford Cardinal just never translated to the NFL level as his practice play would've suggested. And now, he—like Fisher along with him—he awaits his immediate future after release from the team.
