The Houston Texans faced their former quarterback in an emotional game, but both lost. On Sunday, Deshaun Watson was back in town to take on the team that drafted him and where he was a three-time Pro Bowler and 2020 NFL passing leader.
After missing 700 days of football after a suspension given after over two dozen female massage therapists for sexual harassment and sexual assault sued him, the NFL gave Watson an 11-game suspension for his action. While many believed that Watson should not be allowed to play football again, his suspension ended, and he played his former team for his first game back.
How did Watson perform?
The Cleveland Brown defeated the Houston Texans 27-14. However, Deshaun Watson had one of the worst games of his NFL career. Watson threw for 131 yards and an interception in the end-zone. That looked like he almost forgot he wasn’t on the Texans anymore.
Watson looked very rusty like he hadn’t played for over 700 days. He showed some impressive highlights, but the balls were either inaccurate or dropped. He will only improve and may lead the Browns to another win, lowering the first-round draft pick the Texans received in exchange for Watson.
Houston Texans QB Play and Play calls are a disaster
The defense outplayed the offense in a Big way for the Texans. The defense held Watson for only 131 passing yards but continues to struggle against the run. While the run defense is awful, the quarterback play is the problem.
Kyle Allen’s starting position may be gone after Sunday’s performance. Allen had 201 passing yards and two interceptions in an overall terrible performance. He did throw to Nico Collins for a touchdown, but it was in garbage time, trying to lessen the score differential.
Allen overthrew, underthrew, and entirely missed many players. He threw to Collins 10 times but only connected for three receptions, while the other seven attempts looked uncatchable. They have taken Allen out at halftime. Lovie Smith and Pep Hamilton should have given Davis Mills a chance to help the team win. Texans fans would have been excited if the Texans beat Deshaun Watson and the Browns, but Allen gave the team no shot.
The Texans will have the number one overall selection in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft. Things may change if the team somehow wins out and the teams behind them in rankings continue to lose. However, the Texans remaining schedule is difficult playing the Cowboys, the Chiefs, the Titans, the Jaguars, and the Colts. The Texans best odds for winning games would be against the Colts and Jaguars, but with nothing to gain with a win, the team will likely lose on out for the remainder of the NFL season.
