Texans QB Davis Mills helps get Houston on the board in the first quarter

The first touchdown for the Houston Texans in Week 3 was near the goal line on second down. The touchdown happened when Texans quarterback Davis Mills found tight end Jordan Akins in the back of the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter.

This play was set up by solid runs from rookie Dameon Pierce, plus the drive included a 52-yard reception from wide receiver Chris Moore. The scoring drive totaled seven plays for 75 yards with it ending with the Akins touchdown grab.

Below is the play via NFL Twitter where Mills found Akins in the end zone for six points:

Texans: Touchdown by Akins is big for the tight end

The Texans’ touchdown kept them close at the time where it brought them to within three points of tying the Bears at 10-7.

This was the first touchdown reception of the 2022 season for Akins as this is his first game played this season after being on the practice squad this year. Akins previously played from 2018-21 with Houston, where his most recent touchdown before this one came in 2020.

Last season, the tight end Akins finished with 24 receptions for 214 yards with no touchdowns. Entering this game, Akins’ career numbers included 114 receptions for 1,260 yards with three touchdowns.

Akins, if he stays on the active 53-man roster, might be able to add to his career totals because like he showed with the touchdown reception, he can still make some big plays. The Houston offense needs all the help they can get and having Akins on the team has made a big difference so far in Week 3.
