How many picks will the Texans have when the 2022 NFL Draft takes place?

The 2022 NFL Draft is less than a week away from being on the clock, and for the Houston Texans that means there will be a lot of busy times and important decisions to be made when their name reaches the board.

Houston is scheduled to have 11 picks when the draft takes place, and that includes two picks in the first, third and fourth rounds, three picks in the sixth round, and one pick in the second and seventh rounds. The Texans don’t have a fifth-round pick as they previously traded that selection.

Below are where the Texans are scheduled to pick in the NFL Draft 2022 which is less than a week away:

  • Round 1  — No. 3 and No. 13
  • Round 2 — No. 37
  • Round 3 — No. 68 and No. 80
  • Round 4 — No. 107 and No. 108
  • Round 5 — NONE
  • Round 6 — No. 183, No. 205, No. 207
  • Round 7 — No. 245

This is a massive amount of picks, especially compared to last year when the Texans made only five choices in the draft, and they didn’t have a pick until the third round.

Let’s take a look back at the first year Houston general manager Nick Caserio was in charge of the draft and who the team selected in 2021:

  • Round 3 — Davis Mills (quarterback)
  • Round 3: — Nico Collins (wide receiver)
  • Round 5:  — Brevin Jordan (tight end)
  • Round 5: — Garret Wallow (linebacker)
  • Round 6: — Roy Lopez (defensive tackle)

For having just five picks last year and none until round three, the ’21 draft for Houston wasn’t so bad as they found players who are starters and possibly their franchise quarterback if things keep moving forward and improving for Mills in his second season.

Caserio also did a nice job in selecting Collins last year too, because he’s only going to improve with time, and that means if he’s doing well, most likely that means Mills and the offense of the Texans will be playing well.

Texans: Draft will be exciting from start to finish in ’22

The past couple years, Houston fans had to wait to be excited for the draft because the past first-round pick the Texans made was back in 2019 when the franchise selected Tytus Howard with the 23rd overall selection, and it is safe to say that pick turned out pretty well.

Since then, the Texans haven’t had their first-round choices as they traded the ’20 and ’21 picks to the Miami Dolphins for offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil. That means the past three first-round picks for the Texans have been used for offensive tackles.

Looking forward to this upcoming week the Texans can make a splash with their roster as they can keep all 11 picks, made big headlines with trades of top picks, or they can do a mix of both and still draft some coveted players while rebuilding the roster.

The belief is the Texans will be using their third overall pick, and if they do the opinion here is it must be a defensive player, starting the process of making the Texans a feared defense once again like they’ve been in the past.

Now with the remainder of the picks, at No. 13 that could be a pick teams might want to trade for, and a pick Houston can use for more draft capital. The 13th pick the Texans gained when they traded Deshaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns.

However things turn out for Houston next week, going into the draft they have 11 picks and even more so there are feeling of excitement, opportunity and the fact there is something special on the way for the franchise within the next few seasons.
