Melvin Gordon, Running Back (Denver Broncos)

Here is one that has potential for the Houston Texans, and it could be where the risk is well worth the reward when it comes to signing Melvin Gordon as a free agent.

This won’t be a long-term deal, but Gordon would be worth the risk of singing a running back going into his ninth season, and on 203 carries in ’21 he rushed for 903 yards for the Broncos, which is better than anything the running backs of the Texans did this past season.

Gordon is a solid pro running back, and he’s been successful with the Broncos and Chargers, so adding the veteran to the Houston Texans offense could really help improve the play of second-year Texans quarterback Davis Mills because Gordon has seen a lot in his career.

In ’21 with his 903 yards, Gordon also collected eight rushing scores, averaged 4.5 yards per carry, and receiving he caught 28 receptions for 218 yards with two touchdowns. Even in ’20 with the Broncos, Gordon rushed for 986 yards on 215 carries with nine touchdowns.

Granted, the offensive line is a better run blocking unit, but the Texans can work on that also through free agency, the draft, and current players improving their game this offseason.

Gordon might not be the most exciting choice at running back, but when healthy, he’s a very good rusher and better than any running back that played on the team last season.
