Do the Houston Texans have a new head coach, and is it Lovie Smith?

Just when everyone thought the candidates to be the new head coach of the Houston Texans were Josh McCown and Brian Flores, in comes former Super Bowl head coach Lovie Smith. That’s according to a report on Sunday night by Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Schefter tweeted about the veteran football coach Smith possibly becoming the next head coach of the Texans on the same day it was said that current Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon was informed he wasn’t getting the job of being the Texans new head coach.

Smith has a vast amount of head coach experience as he led the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl as their head coach – as the Bears lost to the Colts – and he’s also been the head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and University of Illinois. This past season, Smith was the defensive coordinator for the Texans.

Here is what Schefter tweeted on Sunday night about the Texans and Smith when it comes to the head coach position:

If this is true it is an interesting hire, but a safe hire as Smith is more than capable of running an NFL team as a head coach, and he brings a lot of knowledge, and it keeps McCown from his first-ever coaching job being the head coach of the Texans.

This possible hire of Smith as the head coach gives general manager Nick Caserio time to put his focus on getting the player the new head coach of the Texans will need to be successful. Who knows this roster right now better than Smith, especially the players on the defense?

If Smith becomes the next head coach, it will allow him to focus on making the defense better, and maybe the franchise can bring in an offensive coordinator who can help turn that unit around too.

The question is where does this leave Brian Flores, as he too is said to be a finalist for the Houston Texans head coach position? Flores is coming off two straight winning seasons with the Miami Dolphins, and even with his lawsuit against the NFL and some of its teams, he is a very talented head coach too.

Texans rumors: Signs pointing to Lovie Smith as the new head coach in Houston

Back to Smith, who with the Bears and Buccaneers had a record of 89-87, has previously been an NFL head coach for 11 years, but not been in complete charge of a team and coaching staff since 2015 at the professional level.

This past season he was not only the DC for the Houston Texans, but also the associate head coach, so if stability and a vast knowledge of being a head coach are what the Texans and Caserio want, then this is the hire that’s probably going to happen.

There is still the waiting of the official word of Lovie Smith being selected as the next head coach of the Houston Texans, replacing David Culley who was fired after one season, but it isn’t McCown, and the Texans won’t have another head coach learning on the job.
