Having a 2-10 overall record entering Week 14 the Houston Texans currently sit in the third overall spot of the 2022 NFL Draft, trailing only the Detroit Lions and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Lions have the worst record in the NFL after 13 weeks at 1-10-1 overall, followed by the Jacksonville Jaguars at 2-10 overall. The Jaguars are one of the two teams the Texans have defeated this season, along with the Tennessee Titans.

Rounding out the current Top 5 in the ’22 draft order are the New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks, though the Jets have possession of the Seahawks’ pick due to an earlier trade.

The Texans are coming off one of their worst and depressing losses of the ’21 season, a 31-0 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, as it was some of the worst offensive football by any team this season. This week has no indication of being any better.

Texans: Who will return to the team next season at quarterback?

Houston is in a rebuild mode and it is unsure if current quarterbacks Davis Mills and Tyrod Taylor will even return for next season, though Mills should stay on the roster because he was a third round pick this year.

There is also the case of current head coach David Culley who is in his first year as a head coach, but it isn’t a given that general manager Nick Caserio will keep Culley as the leader of the team at the conclusion of this season.

The Texans also have many expiring contracts on the roster, which for a team that is in the midst of rebuilding the roster, having nine draft picks at the moment – plus needing players who will be on the roster for the long-term – this draft is of great importance of the future of the franchise.

Facing the Seattle next in Week 14 won’t be easy as the Seahawks are a better team overall than Houston, but they aren’t as good of a team as they used to be either. Seattle has Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback so if he’s on the field Seattle always has a chance to win.

If the Texans keep this spot in the ’22 draft a Top 3 pick would be huge for this franchise. They are professionals and should do their best to be a competitive football team if they respect the NFL, which would make this team worth watching as the regular season winds down, even if some wins hurt the draft pick spot in the process.
