Houston Texans: David Culley has ‘dream come true’ as head coach
David Culley is now officially the fourth head coach of the Houston Texans, and though he might not have been the fans’ choice to be the on-the-field leader of the franchise, one thing we know is he’ll respect the position, he’ll respect the franchise and Culley has earned the opportunity at 25-plus years in the NFL and 40-plus years as a football coach to lead a team.
In a press conference on Friday, the Texans put up a good front, and Culley spoke truthfully about becoming the fourth head coach in team history, following Dom Capers, Gary Kubiak and Bill O’Brien.
Culley — who is 65 years old — will bring change within the Houston Texans as he and general manager Nick Caserio have a lot of work to do and fences to mend. McNair and his sidekick Jack Easterby should stay out of any decision making from here on out while Culley and others try to repair any sort of relationship between Deshaun Watson and the Texans.
As for Culley, he deserves high respect for all that he’s accomplished in his coaching career, as most recently he was the assistant head coach of the Baltimore Ravens where he worked with John Harbaugh and quarterback Lamar Jackson.
In the press conference on Friday, Culley was quoted as saying the following, with the comments provided by the Houston Texans Public Relations Department:
"“On behalf of my family, I would like to thank Janice, Cal and Hannah McNair for the amazing opportunity of being the next head coach of the Houston Texans.”"
Culley continued with the following statement:
"“To say that I am excited and that this is a dream come true is an understatement. Along the way, I have had countless people, organizations, family members and friends pour into me and prepare a path for me. My genuine hope is that this moment is as much theirs as it is mine. Let’s get to work and let’s do it together!”"
Houston Texans: David Culley has vast amount of experience in NFL
Though some believe Eric Bieniemy should have been the choice to become the next head coach of the Houston Texans, that doesn’t mean one needs to look at Culley as a poor decision. To be in the NFL for 25-plus years at the various coaching positions he’s held, Culley must know something about the game.
It is time to give Culley the benefit of a doubt moving forward because other than not cheering for the team or not wanting them to have any success, there is no other option. Culley is taking over a mess made by the front office of the Texans, but for those who wanted something and someone different than Bill O’Brien, well, Culley will have a different style of coaching than the former head coach.
Culley deserves congratulations on being the new head coach of the Houston Texans, but now it is up to him to help repair this franchise because there is a lot of work to be done on the football field, and just as much off the football field as well.
