Would Houston Texans legend Andre Johnson be a good fit as the next GM?

In the wake of Monday’s firing of head coach and general manager Bill O’Brien, a few questions have been left that will eventually have to be answered. A couple of those questions include: Who will want to take on the job vacancies, and who would want to come work for an organization with no top draft picks in the 2021 NFL Draft?

The Houston Texans do have positives still in the organization with stars Deshaun Watson and J.J. Watt, who the latter was said to have had arguments with O’Brien prior to the firing of the former head coach and GM.

Even without first or second-round draft picks next April due to the Tunsil trade with the Miami Dolphins last year, this Houston Texans roster has a lot to offer in terms of hope and leadership.

Still a young franchise, the Texans need strong leadership in the front office. The Houston Texans need someone who can look at the bad situations and still give everything he has to the job for Houston’s future.

Here is one suggestion early in the process of looking for a new general manager … Why not Houston Texans Ring of Honor member Andre Johnson?

Houston Texans: Could Andre Johnson be the right pick as the next GM?

Former Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson is still considered the greatest Houston Texans player in franchise history, though might be knocked to “second best” once Watt finishes up his storied career.

The all-time leader in yards, receptions, and touchdown catches for the Houston Texans, Johnson  stepped away from his role as special advisor to the GM while staying on as a Texans Ambassador.

Even with that change this still could this be the time to look at Andre Johnson as the future general manager? Johnson said in a statement when he was inducted to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame that, “I’m learning the business of the game.” Johnson also said, “I thought I might want to be a GM or run a team,” back in 2019.

Why not truly bring Andre Johnson back home to the Houston Texans? He’s still a staple in the Houston community, his presence as Texans general manager would be a spark for the players, coaches, and future prospects.

Johnson is a no-doubt Hall of Famer, having his credentials as a former player running the team he would have a better idea of what the team needs going forward. Also with Andre Johnson being a no-nonsense kind of man, he would be able to make the tough calls that need to be made for this franchise to get back on track and even reach heights the Houston Texans have yet to achieve.

Andre Johnson was the face of the franchise in the Texans’ early years when he was by the franchise in 2003. Now is the time to let him be the guide in the years to come as the general manager, as he could help build a front office that Deshaun Watson and company need.

Houston Texans Chairman and CEO Cal McNair has a lot to consider in the coming months. Andre Johnson should be on the list to consider for the job, because if anyone else is mad about the mire of mediocrity, Dre will be at the top of the list.
