The Houston Texans news needs to be the Texans having to consider recently released offensive guard Larry Warford to the roster in free agency.

If there is one spot on the roster where the Houston Texans news could be better, and where the franchise could use some improvement on the offensive line, it is at offensive guard.

The Texans news for this week is they could have — or at least should have — interest in released offensive guard Larry Warford, formally of the New Orleans Saints. Warford isn’t cheap as his most recent contract with the Saints was four years, $34 million with an $8.4 million signing bonus.

According to Spotrac.com the Texans after all of their offseason moves still have around $17,741,131 remaining in the salary cap this season.

Warford with the Saints played in 970 snaps in 2019, having just six penalties and allowed only two sacks. At the end of the ’19 season, Warford received a 73.1 overall grade from Pro Football Focus, which was a better grade than he had in ’18, but still not the best grade of his career.

Warford has played seven seasons in the league, with his past three being with the Saints, and first four seasons with the Detroit Lions as the 6’3” guard was a third round pick in 2013.

Now with the current Texans starting offensive guards they include 2019 second round pick Max Scharping at left guard, and Zach Fulton at right guard. As good as Warford is at his position, the Texans don’t need to slow down the progression of Scharping because he needs on-field time, and he is a second round investment as well.

Now for Fulton or even Senio Kelemete, that is where Warford comes into play on the roster. This is where the chance at offensive line would — and should come — if Warford were to become apart of some good Texans news and be signed by the franchise.

The Texans have a great opportunity in front of the, plus the salary cap space, to make their roster better. Now it is up to the franchise to have some more positive Texans news and sign an offensive guard who is an improvement over players currently at the position.

Houston Texans News: More on Larry Warford

Mark Lane of TexansWire.com wrote highly of Larry Warford as well in a recent article, describing many aspects of the linemen possibly joining the team. One aspect of the article, Lane wrote about the rushing game of the Texans as they’ve added David Johnson, but now can add a guard to improve as well.

Lane of TexansWire wrote the following about Warford and the Texans’ rushing game:

"“If Houston adds Warford and upgrades at guard, it could be enough to elevate the running game to a level where it truly lessens the burden Watson.”"

Lane is correct in his assessment of adding a guard to make the Texans a better rushing team which would help Deshaun Watson too. Though the Texans have made some decisions that still can’t be considered the correct choices this offseason, they could make a good choice if they sign Larry Warford in free agency.

Houston Texans News: Deshaun Watson contract extension coming soon?

Over at 247Sports, Garrett Stephen writes about how Deshaun Watson has a “big pay day” coming soon as the article said Jeremy Flower of ESPN spoke with various league executives. The 247Sports.com article stated the following:

"“Deshaun Watson’s big pay day will be coming at some point, because several league execs I spoke to believe that Watson will be the next quarterback in line for that mega extension…”"

The Texans news this week needs to be that the two sides — Watson and the Texans — have come to terms on a new contract that can give Texans fans, Watson and the franchise itself that the top quarterback is secured on the roster for many years to come.

Though some of the more exciting parts of the offseason have been completed, there are still many more important decisions to be made that will be of great importance moving forward.
