Round 7 (from Denver Broncos): Mark McLaurin, SS, Mississippi State
This is a pick to build on for the future and a pick to provide some depth for the Houston Texans if free agency doesn’t turn out how they want it to. Mark McLaurin of Mississippi State doesn’t jump off the page and isn’t one of the big names right now, but he has a chance to be selected on Day 3 of the 2019 NFL Draft, so the Texans should show some interest.
The Texans might lose Tyrann Mathieu in free agency this offseason, and though McLaurin probably won’t be the instant answer to replace him, there still could be a roster spot available for the 6-1, 215-pound safety for depth purposes early on in his career.
What there is to like about McLaurin at first glimpse is his size at 6-1, and the fact at Mississippi State he totaled four passes defensed this past season, while also making 33 solo tackles and he forced one fumble.
In his final three seasons at Mississippi State, McLaurin collected 15 passes defensed, and if he were to join the Texans, that would be a great asset with the team facing Andrew Luck of the Indianapolis Colts twice a season.
Anything the Texans can do to add to their secondary is a positive in this draft, so maybe using their final pick from the Denver Broncos (gained from the Demaryius Thomas trade) is very worthwhile.
