Odds are the Houston Texans take a quarterback in this year’s draft.  And it could be Patrick Mahomes.

Rob Rang of CBS Sports and Peter Schrager of FOX Sports have released their latest NFL mock drafts.

Rang and Schrager have something in common.  They both have the Houston Texans using the 25th overall pick on Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Here’s what Rang wrote:

"Though an offensive tackle might fill a greater immediate need, few know better than the Texans the high price of quarterbacks. After starring in Tech’s shotgun-heavy Air-Raid offense, Mahomes is undeniably a project but he possesses the mobility, arm strength and intangibles to project as a future NFL starter."

From Schrager:

"Could the Texans really acquire yet another quarterback this offseason? Sure. I’m not sure what the deal is at the moment. But heading into the combine, Tony Romo is not there, Brock Osweiler still is, and Tom Savage is lingering, too. Deshaun Watson is the wild card here. He could go second overall or the second round. The combine matters. Mahomes is the scouts’ darling at the moment, and I have him as the fourth-ranked QB in this draft heading into Indy. He could leapfrog Watson while there."

I would still rather see the Texans trade their first round pick for Jimmy Garoppolo instead of drafting Mahomes.

I’m having a hard time believing Mahomes or any other rookie in this year’s class will be a better NFL quarterback than Garoppolo.

The one positive to taking Mahomes is he wouldn’t cost Houston much money over the next few years.  While Garoppolo will need a new contract next year.
