One player that could be a cap casualty for the Houston Texans is back up offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom.
Given the fact that the 30 year-old Bergstrom is scheduled to bring in $2.6 million for the 2017 season, the best thing for the Texans to do would be to release him in order to save the money and put it elsewhere.
A nice chunk of Bergstrom’s $2.6 million salary will come on March 9th when he’s scheduled to collect a $250,000 roster bonus.

It would be nice for the Texans to have a veteran like Bergstrom behind Greg Mancz, Nick Martin, Oday Aboushi and Xavier Su’a-Filo, but they have to decide whether paying him almost $3 million next season is worth it.
Given the fact that the Texans would only have to swallow $375,000 in dead money if they do in fact cut Bergstrom, it makes a lot of sense.
Houston can always find a cheaper replacement via free agency or through the draft.
With the Texans hoping to re-sign free agents A.J. Bouye, John Simon, Ryen Griffen and others, they will need all the money can get. Â And getting rid of Bergstrom would give them more flexibility. Especially when it comes to giving star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins a new contract.
