Bill O’Brien big believer in Jimmy Garoppolo, per report
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports is reporting that Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien is a big believer in New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
As much as I’m sure O’Brien would love to acquire Garopppolo from the Patriots, they can’t afford to make the move with Brock Osweiler’s salary.
"Texans coach Bill O’Brien is a big believer in Garoppolo as well, but he is stuck with Brock Osweiler’s salary for another year, and he is planning on giving Tom Savage every opportunity to win that starting job, sources said. Ownership has already declared the need to draft a quarterback."
Now this of course does not mean that O’Brien and the Texans wouldn’t be able to make a move for Garoppolo in 2018, since that is when he’s currently scheduled to become a free agent.
The Patriots have a very difficult decision to make. Do they trade Garoppolo now? Do they sign him to an extension after next season and have him take over for Tom Brady? Or do they let him walk as a free agent?

If Brady has the kind of year he had in 2016, in 2017, the Patriots won’t be able to keep him and then sign Garoppolo to a lucrative extension. Unless they know for sure they would be able to trade him.
While Garoppolo’s body of work isn’t large, he did enough in 2016 to prove that he should get a chance to become an NFL starter. That chance could come in Houston in 2018.
