1. Sam Montgomery, third round, 2013

I’m going with this one despite him being a third-round pick. But he’s at the top of this list for how spectacular his failure of being a sleeper pick to being a wasted pick.

That waisted pick was used on Sam Montgomery, who was a beast at linebacker for LSU in 2012, earning first-team All-SEC honors in 2011 and 2012. It was considered to be a steal for Houston to get him in the third round.

But after he was drafted in the 2013 draft, Montgomery got hurt and didn’t get any reps in training camp. He was put on IR and still was able to travel with the team.

And then came that fateful October night while the Texans were on the road, when Montgomery and two other Texan rookie players were arrested for possession of marijuana in a hotel room. That was the last straw for Bill O’Brien, who soundly cut him.

Montgomery was picked up by Cincinnati, but didn’t play a down for them before the Bengals cut him as well.

It’s a sad deal because the Texans did need a pass-rushing linebacker that can produce on third downs. Montgomery could have been that player, but an injury and a dumb decision makes him the biggest bust in franchise history.
