Honorable mentions
Other players who could possibly turn a lot of heads along the defense for the Houston Texans during training camp include rookie outside linebacker Lynden Trail who will try and make a mark on the team while Clowney is recovering from knee surgery. There will be a lot of snaps to take advantage of during the preseason and early portions of the regular season.
At 6’7″ and 269 pounds Trail has the size to play the position and cause some problems for opponents. With a background that includes playing tight end, he could have some real versatility to use while trying to make his name known.
Justin Tuggle received some good time at middle linebacker last season and ended the year with 39 tackles and an interception. He showed some good instincts and does have the bloodlines as both his father, linebacker Jessie Tuggle, and brother, defensive tackle Grady Jarrett (a rookie this season) have been members of the Atlanta Falcons.
While there is talent ahead of him, it is also no secret that Brian Cushing has had his share of health problems in his career. Tuggle can try and show that he also belongs on the field and can be relied upon should the team suffer another injury at the spot.
Andre Hal was a cornerback for the Texans in 2014 after being picked in the seventh round. He found himself on the field a lot due to injuries last year and in an effort to find himself there even more in the future, he has added some bulk and is trying his hand at safety.
The Texans obviously value coverage skills at the position as most of their safeties are known more for their skill in this area rather than tackling. This could play right into the hands of the second-year player who is moving over from the corner spot.
I am sure there will be many more stories to come to the surface during the preseason, and it will be great to watch it all unfold on HBO leading up to the regular season. Feel free to comment below and let me know who you are most looking forward to watching as the season approaches.
