3. How has Rod Marinelli changed the Cowboys’ defense since taking over as the defensive coordinator?

SM: Part of it is being in the same system for two years. Having been in the 4-3, Cover 2/Tampa 2 defensive scheme for the second straight season has helped the players accumulate to the new system and made things simpler.

The other is a focus on fundamentals. Playing solid football with a focus on tackling and stripping the ball.

4. Can you talk about the Cowboys sticking with the rushing attack this season, and how it has made a difference? Do you worry about the health of Murray?

SM: A focus on the running game has made all the difference this season. Again, I’m not sure Dallas isn’t 0-4 without it. As far as Murray’s health, it’s always a concern.

DeMarco has missed 11 games in the last three seasons due to injury. That fact could be the biggest reason Murray isn’t re-signed at year’s end. But I also think there is a belief any of the Cowboys running backs could have similar success behind this talented offensive line.

5. Game Prediction and why?

SM: The Dallas Cowboys are coming off an unexpected blowout victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday Night Football. Now the national media is buzzing about the team’s potential. As long as Dallas can maintain their winning formula of running the ball behind this dominant offensive line, you have to like their chances of fulfilling that potential.

Still, the Houston Texans have the best defensive player in the league right now in J.J. Watt. Pro Football Focus ranks him as the top 3-4 defensive end in the NFL so far this season … and it’s not even close. Watt’s overall rating is a 25.1+.

The next closest 3-4 defensive end is the Washington Redskins’ Jason Hatcher with a 9.6+. And Watt is particularly skilled at rushing the passer.

But if Dallas can rely on running back DeMarco Murray to carry this offense, the Cowboys should have the edge over a Texans team that is struggling offensively.

Final Score: Dallas Cowboys 37, Houston Texans 29
