Greetings Texans Fans!

According to reports, the Texans have exercised their option for JJ Watt’s 5th year ensuring that he will not enter free agency until after the 2015 Season. While this is a good thing for the team and fans, it does leave Mr. Watt with leverage in terms of contract negotiations. Because this is the first group of players under the new CBA, Watt’s 5th year pay will be determined as the average of the top 25 players at his positions sans the top three earners.

Based on the JJ Watt fans have come to love, this shouldn’t present a huge point of contention between the team and Watt. The Texans have every incentive in the world to offer JJ anything he wants within reason, but like Mario Williams and other players, the ultimate decision will come to what is best for JJ Watt.

This isn’t to imply he’s going to run off for the big bucks elsewhere, I don’t get that vibe from him. I think this seasons progress will do more for keeping JJ Watt a Texan for years to come rather then some dollar amount. Progress, a winning attitude, accountability. That’s what I see JJ Watt responding to. We shall see, I’m glad he’s locked up contractually for two years, however we’ll all feel better when a much deserved long term pay day comes his way.Few players are as amazing to watch on the field and equally outstanding off the field. A true bigger then life face of both the franchise and really the NFL as a whole. Don’t worry fans, the Texans ownership knows what they have in JJ Watt and hopefully they can convince him in what the future holds.
