Storylines to watch for the Texans in week three
How will the Texans offense respond after abysmal outing against the Cincinnati Bengals last week?
After the Texans were held to only six points thanks to various offensive miscues--and the sheer dominance of Bengals defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence--they come into today's game looking to regain their offensive form from week one's 36-31 shootout with the Buffalo Bills.
Unlike last week, they won't be facing a stout rushing defense. And to being quite honest, they seemingly won't be facing a threatening defense as a whole, seeing as though Indy's defense has been on a record-setting pace for the volume of yards and points they've allowed through only two weeks of NFL play.
Allowing over 1,000 yards and 74 points between their first two opponents combined is not a recipe for a winning record. Thus, the Texans have a golden opportunity to right their offensive ship in Indianapolis this afternoon.
Is Texans OC Nick Caley for his job?
A 30-second search inquiry into "Texans-Twitter" (wouldn't recommend if you're Nick Caley) would yield a litany of reactions and skepticism surrounding Houston's offensive coordinator in Nick Caley. Being in his second-year, Caley is facing more expectations thatn ever before, especially given the Super Bowl-level implications of this campaign.
After what appeared to be a revelation of an offensive output in week one, Caley's unit struggled to look more than below average last week against the Bengals. Granted, Caley was without Pro Bowl wide receiver Nico Collins due to a hamstring strain (while already being with fellow receivers Jayden Higgins and Tank Dell).
However, many fans were upset with Caley due to a perceived lack of adjustment mid-game to Cincinnati's defensive line, as well as a lack of commitment to utilizing other pass catching weapons besides the wide receivers due to how ineffective the unit was early on in the game (Xavier Hutchinson, Jared Wayne, etc.).
The Colts are the 32nd-ranked defense in the entire NFL through two weeks. While some of that counter-productive may course correct on its own for Indy, the reality is that Houston's offense has no excuse this week (even without Collins).
If Caley can't draw up a game plan that takes advantage of what could be a historically poor defensive unit for the Colts, then his dismissal may become more of a matter of when and not if give the stakes involved. A second consecutive 0-3 start on Caley's watch doesn't look the best when considering long-term job security.
Will Texans QB C.J. Stroud continue his passing proficiency in week three?
Heading into week three of NFL play, C.J. Stroud has the fourth-most passing yards (627) in the league behind only the Green Bay Packers' Jordan Love (844), the New Orleans Saints' Tyler Shough (662) and the Carolina Panthers' Bryce Young (648).
Against a Lou Anarumo defense that currently allows a league-leading 337.5 yards per game through the air, Stroud could be in line for a major day in the production department. If he has a second consecutive 300-yard game in his back pocket today, he could potentially land as the NFL's top passer by the end of week three (cry about it, Stroud doubters).
