The Houston Texans open the 2022 NFL season at NRG Stadium on Sunday against the Colts in a Week 1 battle of the AFC South.
This is it Houston Texans fans, the day is finally here for the start of the Texans’ 2022 regular season as they will be facing the Indianapolis Colts in a battle of the AFC South. Houston has been rebuilding their roster from the bottom up this offseason, and even the Colts have made some big changes to their team from a year ago.
There are certainly players to watch on Sunday from both teams, but maybe the most important part of the Houston offense isn’t Davis Mills at quarterback or even Brandin Cooks at wide receiver, rather the offensive line and running back Dameon Pierce for the home team will be the ones to “make or break” Houston in Week 1. On defense for the Texans, players to watch are the rookie defensive backs Derek Stingley Jr. and Jalen Pitre.
Players to watch for the Colts are the usual suspects Matt Ryan, Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman Jr. on offense. On defense for Indianapolis the players to watch are Stephon Gilmore and DeForest Buckner.
Houston’s injury report going into the weekend only had two players listed with those being defensive lineman Mario Addison (thigh-doubtful) and defensive lineman Rasheem Green (thigh-questionable).
For the Colts, they announced on Friday that star linebacker Shaquille Leonard has a back injury and is out for Sunday’s season opener.

This game has the makings of a competitive contest if Houston doesn’t make too many mistakes, and not allow the best running back in the game — Jonathan Taylor — to control how the game is played out. If Houston can slow down Taylor they have a realistic chance to have the upset win, if not, then that means it won’t be the opener all fans have been waiting for to start the ’22 season.
