The Houston Texans took on the defending champion Buccaneers, coming out with a 23-16 loss
This game got off to an interesting start with starting Safety Justin Reid kicking off, resulting in a touchback. The Texans special teams showed up after the defense was burned alive on Tampa’s second drive with a blocked extra point. This is what teams need to see early on, as special teams can help you win 1-3 games in a season.
The decision to run the ball on 3rd and 5 inside the red zone is understandable, but the execution was poor. Another interception from the defense in the first half continued the takeaway streak, but it was against Blaine Gabbert- the Buccaneers backup quarterback. Another fumble was recovered in the third quarter, and the Texans defense matched their total of takeaways in this preseason that they had last year.
Houston Texans fans got a chance to see what a championship roster looks like
Anyone who gets to go against arguably the greatest quarterback of all time is going to have a tough game. Tom Brady showed us why he’s so good at this point in his career. That second drive of 7-consecutive passes that moved lightning fast down the field resulted in the Buccaneers first touchdown.
The Texans first-team offense struggled, and it was the first time this preseason that the Texans faced a team that was way above their skill level. Davis Mills continued to bring the Texans back, along with the special teams- despite Ka’imi Fairbairn being held out due to precautionary reasons.
It was going to be a very hard task toppling Tampa Bay in the preseason finale. However, Texans fans shouldn’t be concerned about this loss at all. This is a great tune-up and a reality check that they aren’t always gonna see 2nd and 3rd string units out against them.,
