Round 5, Pick148: James Wiggins, S, Cincinnati

Adding multiple players to the secondary in the draft should not surprise any fan of the Houston Texans. While cornerback was the biggest weakness in the secondary, the Texans certainly weren’t enjoying elite safety play last year either.

Adding another safety on day three certainly would not be the worst idea. James Wiggins emerged as one of the best defenders on a Cincinnati Bearcats team that made a run to the Peach Bowl. He’s also a story of resilience, as he battled back from a torn ACL which he suffered earlier in his career.

Wiggins is an athletic freak, as he is said to have a 40 time in the low 4.4’s. He plays with the sort of physical tenacity you like to see in a safety. Through two seasons as a starter, Wiggins compiled over 80 tackles and five interceptions.

Wiggins is an athletic player that plays hard and has battled through adversity. He may or may not one day become a starter at the next level, but he strikes you as the type that will work hard in whichever role he is given. I could definitely see him becoming the type that establishes himself as a special teams standout, and who knows what the ceiling could be from that point on.
