2. Texans News: Cornerback is key for success

There is a log jam of cornerbacks on the roster, but exactly who is staying and who is going? It looks like Gareon Conley will be playing harder than ever this season as his fifth-year option wasn’t picked up by the Texans, but if healthy, he’ll probably be the starting left cornerback on the team.

Don’t forget about Lonnie Johnson Jr., Phillip Gaines, A.J. Moore, Bradley Roby, Keion Crossen, Vernon Hargreaves, rookie John Reid (a fourth round pick), Anthony Chesley and Cornell Armstrong all also listed on the depth chart at cornerback.

Lonnie Johnson Jr. is poised to be better this season as it will be his second year on the team, and the exciting part about this is which of the aforementioned players will step up and out of the pack to stand out during training camp and the preseason?

This battle of who stays and goes, plus who will be the starters, might be the most intriguing and exciting of all the position battles this offseason.

None of the players listed are in the elite category when it comes to cornerbacks in the league, but how the Texans handle this situation with the cornerbacks will be key to their defense. Without a proper secondary, times could be tough for the Texans in 2020.

Most likely, the Texans news will be they will keep around six of the 10 players listed so be prepared for a very competitive roster spot battle at cornerback very soon.
