Some good Houston Texans news for fans is that it seems evident that Deshaun Watson is going to be very happy with a potential contract extension.
There is no doubt that the Houston Texans news is going to eventually be one day that Deshaun Watson signs a contract extension with the franchise that makes him a very well-paid quarterback, maybe even the highest-paid quarterback in the league.
When that happens, the Texans will be able to know they have locked up one of the very best quarterbacks in the league, and they can continue working to improve other area of the roster they believe needs some fine tuning.
Watson is entering his fourth season as the starting quarterback after three very successful seasons in the league, where his current contract is in the fourth of five seasons, and he’s scheduled to make $1.177 million in base salary, not including bonuses.
In three three on-field seasons with the Texans, Watson has played at a high level where his numbers include 9,716 passing yards in 38 games (37 starts), plus he has completed 66.8 passes for his career (804-1204) and has thrown for 71 touchdowns, including 26 TDs in each of the past two seasons.
Watson can also run with the football, as he’s totaled 1,233 yards rushing on 217 rushes, and within those numbers Watson has reached the end zone 14 times.
Some of the Texans news for Deshaun Watson and a potential contract extension came from Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle wrote the following this week about Watson’s contract that he’ll be eventually signing to stay with the team longterm:
"“And the Texans still have a major pending item left atop their negotiating priority list: a blockbuster contract extension for star quarterback Deshaun Watson that could range between $40 million and $42 million guaranteed.”"
That is a lot of money, but it is the price the Texans have to pay if they want to have one of the very best young quarterbacks on their team for many years to come. The Texans made a big investment when they drafted him 12th overall back in 2017, and even after the quarterback suffered an ACL tear his rookie season, Watson returned and is maybe better than ever since that moment.
There was a time last season where Watson was in the Most Valuable Player discussion, and eventually, once Watson and the Texans put everything together, don’t be surprised to see Watson as the top player in the league eventually.
As for the hefty price tag that the Texans news seems to be, well, if the Texans want to keep a player with the talent of Watson, $40 million guaranteed is a must in today’s NFL, as most quarterbacks in the league are gaining big-time contracts to stay with their current teams.
The question is when will Watson sign the deal? There is the fact Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes hasn’t signed a new deal, and for the Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott is also in his own contract talks for an extension as he too is going to gain top dollar for his talents at the quarterback position.
When all is said and done, there is no doubt that Watson will continue to be a big part of the Houston offense, as he’s the leader of the offense and one of the few leaders of the entire franchise. The Texans wouldn’t be half of the team they are now without Watson as he’s not only talent throwing and passing the football, but he’s very tough as well, with the QB overcoming being sacked 125 times in his first three seasons.
Houston’s offense is built around the ability of play that Watson brings with him to the field each and every game, and now it is just up to the business side of football to take place, so the on-the-field product can continue from year to year for the Texans.
