The Houston Texans continue their efforts of re-signing their free agents before the new season starts next week.

The Houston Texans announced they have reached an agreement to sign wide receiver DeAndre Carter after he was expected to be an exclusive rights free agent in the offseason. Retaining Carter was a no-brainer move for the Texans as they had the opportunity to negotiate solely with Carter without any other team interfering once free agency started.

Carter holds certain to the Texans as their punt and kick returner on special teams meanwhile holding a reserve role on offense. Carter finished the year averaging 9.7 yards per punt return which ranked third overall in the league. The Texans won’t break the bank to retain him and they have a receiver with knowledge of the offense.

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle also reported that the Texans are re-signing running back and special teamer, Taiwan Jones.

With Carlos Hyde and Lamar Miller expected to hit free agency, it made sense for the Texans to bring a player in-house to a team-friendly deal.

Jones played a pivotal role on special teams for the Texans with 11 tackles. Jones also gained the trust of the coaching staff and saw playing time with the offense in the postseason.

He arguably had one of the biggest plays for the Texans last season after catching a pass from Deshaun Watson for a 34-yard reception to put the special teams in field goal range in overtime against the Buffalo Bills.

Despite being primarily a special teams contributor, Jones could see some more playing time in the offense with the Texans if he is able to show more growth in his second year in Houston.

Texans maintained a strong group of special teamers with re-signing both players and they have the opportunity to still be flexible in free agency to make moves with free agency just around the corner.
