One former member of the Houston Texans is back playing in Houston, but now Sammie Coates is in the XFL and a member of the Houston Roughnecks.
The NFL season has one game remaining, and that means a new league is poised to make a dramatic return, and that is the XFL, which means Sammie Coates is back playing in Houston.
Though Sammie Coates was drafted in the third round by the Pittsburgh Steelers back in 2015, Coates played his most recent season in the NFL during the 2018 season with the Houston Texans. Coates played 12 games for the Texans, catching one pass on two targets, making no starts.

While with the Texans, Coates did play some special teams where he totaled four tackles (one solo), but in the XFL, his focus will be trying to get back the excitement that made him a third-round pick in ’15 by the Steelers.
Now a member of the second pro football team in Houston, Coates has a great chance in front of him, plus on a national stage, with XFL games airing on multiple national networks.
Maybe Coates can rejuvenate his career and even make a return to the NFL one day, and maybe even come back to the Texans if his play improves and he reaches his true potential.
As a member of the Roughnecks, Coates will be coached by June Jones, who has ties with football in Houston too, so they could be fun to watch while the Texans are in their offseason and the Super Bowl is finished.

Also on the Roughnecks is Charles James II, who played on the Texans in 2016 and was fun to watch when the Texans were on Hard Knocks. When in Houston for the part of the ’16 season, James II played in 12 games when he made no starts, but had one pass defensed and 18 total tackles (16 solo). He also returned a kickoff for 18 yards during that same season.
The Roughnecks begin their season on Saturday, Feb. 8 on FOX at home against the Los Angeles Wildcats. Are you going to watch the Roughnecks and the XFL this upcoming season? Let us know your thoughts on this “new” football league.
