This offseason won’t be a quiet one for the Houston Texans as they have already made several changes to their coaching and front office personnel with the Super Bowl game still ahead of them.

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported the Texans promoted defensive line coach Anthony Weaver as their defensive coordinator for next season and fired outside linebackers coach John Pagano.
The Texans weren’t going to sit idly after a 51-31 loss against the Kansas City Chiefs in which the defense looked particularly overwhelmed against Pat Mahomes II and the Chiefs’ offense. According to Wilson, it remains unknown if Romeo Crennel will return to the Texans in another role as he did when Mike Vrabel was promoted to defensive coordinator but retirement could be a real option for the former defensive coordinator of the Texans.

Weaver now becomes the third defensive coordinator since Bill O’Brien was hired as the head coach in 2014. With their new defensive coordinator already in place for the 2020 season, the Texans will have to find coaching replacements for Weaver at the defensive line and Pagano at linebacker.

If the last two years show anything, Texans aren’t immune to change and have made several bold moves with Cal McNair and O’Brien at the helm. Brian Gaine was fired months before the start of the 2019 regular season in year two of his contract in Houston.

Meanwhile, the Texans also fired another important part of their front office in their senior vice president in football administration, Chris Olsen on Sunday afternoon.

Olsen played a pivotal role in managing the long term flexibility of the Texans cap space and worked in negotiating deals with players in the organization. His absence along with the vacancy at the general manager position could give O’Brien and the current group of people in the front office more power to make the moves they want to make on the roster.

Although it could also open up the opportunity for the Texans to hire someone outside the organization to assume those responsibilities.

Nick Caserio is one of the popular names that continue to pop up with his contract expiring soon with the New England Patriots, and the Texans have shown a lot of interest in their last two searches for a general manager.
