Houston Texans: 4 disappointing players at half-point of the 2019 season
By Jair Lopez
Carlos Watkins
Carlos Watkins has been a subpar defensive lineman since being selected in the fourth round by the Houston Texans in the 2017 NFL Draft. Often competing with Joel Heath for a spot on the 46 game-day roster, Watkins and Heath were inactive for the majority of last season as Christian Covington, and Angelo Blackson formed part of the defensive line rotation in 2018.
Watkins was expected to be in for a more prominent role in 2019 with the departures of Covington and Heath, but rookie Charles Omenihu has outplayed him. Watkins has been active for only four games through the first eight weeks of the season, but he will be one of the players that will have to step up in his third year with J.J. Watt out for the season with a torn pectoral injury.
Barring any late move for Week 9, Texans will be placing their trust in Omenihu and Watkins as the defensive ends that will work together moving forward to fill the gap that Watt’s presence leaves behind. Watkins will likely be on the active roster for the rest of the season and will have to make an impact on defense with the new opportunity that has been presented to him.
