Gareon Conley and the patched-up secondary
The Houston Texans secondary is running on fumes with so many changes of personnel. Gareon Conley is the third cornerback to be brought in to the 53 man roster due to injuries and early struggles to the start of the season.
Bradley Roby, Johnathan Joseph, and Tashaun Gipson are questionable for Week 8 against the Oakland Raiders. Roby is the only one that is likely not suiting up after dealing with a hamstring injury that was expected to sideline him towards the end of the month.
Texans are dealing with the dilemma of trying to put their best rotation forward without compromising the health of their players for the long term. Conley’s acquisition from the Raiders was made so he could suit up this week with the injuries that have debilitated the Texans roster.
Conley’s viewed as a fit in press cornerback that could thrive in man coverage, and the Texans have been getting cornerbacks that fit that mold. Lonnie Johnson and Roby are both cornerbacks that can play in man coverage.
Expecting Conley to have a flawless debut is impossible with him adjusting to a new playbook and teammates. However, he will have to be up to the challenge because the Texans don’t have a lot of options outside of him, and they are expecting him to be able to run with the new opportunity that has been presented to him.
