Houston Texans surveying the running back market
By Jair Lopez
The Houston Texans brought in a couple of running backs for workouts on Tuesday afternoon.
Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported the Houston Texans brought in running backs C.J. Anderson and Aca’Cedric Ware for workouts on Tuesday. Texans had a closer look with Anderson after they faced him in the joint practices with the Detroit Lions in the preseason.
Anderson is currently looking for his sixth team in the league after having stints with the Denver Broncos, Carolina Panthers, Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Rams, and the Lions. He was most successful with the Broncos where he earned Pro Bowl recognition in 2014 and helped Denver win Super Bowl 50.

At 28 years of age, Anderson has started in 39 of the 71 games he’s suited up and has 776 carries for 3,497 yards. Anderson has averaged 4.5 yards a carry and had 22 rushing touchdowns over the seven seasons in his career. A serviceable receiver out of the backfield, he also has 108 receptions, 900 receiving yards, and five touchdown receptions.
Meanwhile, Ware is a rookie free agent that went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft and spent his preseason with the Indianapolis Colts. He appeared in all four games of the preseason and finished with 33 carries for 108 rushing yards. Ware could be a future candidate if any players are waived or poached from the Texans practice squad.
Anderson is currently not expected to sign with Houston, but he is an intriguing option to bolster the Texans group of running backs. Texans currently have running backs Carlos Hyde, Duke Johnson, Gregory Howell, and Taiwan Jones on the 53 man roster.
Hyde and Johnson are the primarily backs in the offense, but Jones or Howell could be expendable given certain circumstances. Jones has been dealing with an elbow and hamstring injury that has sidelined him the last two games for the Texans.
His past injury concerns with the Oakland Raiders and the Buffalo Bills could open up an opportunity for a free agent running back to earn a roster spot with the Texans.
