The Houston Texans have been inconsistent with their play this season, which has thrown off the oddsmakers in Vegas.

The 2019 NFL season is underway, with two games already in the books. Despite it being very early in the season, the Vegas oddsmakers have been incredibly off when determining the line of the Houston Texans’ games. This is not necessarily surprising, as the Texans have been difficult to predict. It seems they play to their level of competition, which has been illustrated by their close loss to the New Orleans Saints and their narrow victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

During the first game against the Saints, the line was set at 6.5 in favor of the Saints, and the Texans almost pulled the victory out, as they lost on a game-winning 58-yard field goal by kicker Wil Lutz. The final score to that game was 30-28 with the Texans suffering the heartbreaking loss.

In the second game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Texans were picked as 7.5 point favorites, which was the third-highest line of the week. The game was much closer, as the Texans won 13-12. Needless to say, the Texans almost lost that game, and would have lost were it not for safety Justin Reid’s game-saving tackle on Leonard Fournette on the Jaguars two-point conversion attempt.

It was understandable for the line to be high due to the injury to Jags starting quarterback Nick Foles, as it forced the Jags to turn to rookie Gardner Minshew. Despite this, the game proved to be much closer than predicted.

The oddsmakers have taken notice of their disastrous predictions, as they’ve got the line set for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers much lower. The Chargers are 3 point favorites over the Texans this week, which is much closer than each of the first two games which picked the Texans’ outcome to be determined by more than 6 points.

It will be interesting to see what the lines are set throughout the year as the Texans get more comfortable with the roster acquisitions they made before the start of the season.
