The annual preseason matchup between the Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys could help the Texans gauge where they are entering the 2019 NFL regular season.

There is still lots of work ahead for the Houston Texans entering the third week of the preseason, and on Saturday night in Arlington, Texas the Texans will face in-state rival, the Dallas Cowboys in a game traditionally where both teams use as a “dress rehearsal” to put final in-game work in before the start of the regular season.

The Texans defeated the Cowboys last year in their regular season meeting by a 19-16 score in Houston, winning the Governor’s Cup. The Cowboys lead the regular-season series, 3-2. Also a fun fact, the past two regular-season meetings between the two teams have gone into overtime with both teams each winning one of those games.

Entering this game, the Texans are still fine-tuning their offensive line, though head coach Bill O’Brien did announce last weekend that Matt Kalil is the starting left tackle. The rest of the offensive line still needs work, and this game is a perfect way to see where they stand because the Cowboys’ defense should be a strong unit this season.

It will also be nice to possibly see Deshaun Watson for an extended period of time before the start of the regular season, though the Texans do need to be smart because even though this game is a rivalry showdown, the start of the regular season on Monday Night Football in a couple weeks is more important for the franchise.

Others to watch in this game, other than Watson and members of the offensive line, are players in battle for their football lives so to speak, like wide receiver Tyron Johnson. That also applies to the running back situation, because there are some roster depth questions that need answered between Damarea Crockett and Karan Higdon Jr.

For the players battling for roster spots, this is an important game, but as always, the most important part of the game is keeping Watson and the rest of the top players healthy for Week 1.
