Stud: Joe Webb

Being that he is the third-string quarterback and really the only active Houston Texans quarterback who has been in all of training camp, Thursday night saw Joe Webb play the entire preseason game.

Webb’s stats included going 25-of-40 for 286 yards with one touchdown pass and two interceptions. Webb also ran the ball for 47 yards on six carries to lead the team as well, including one run of 13 yards.

The quarterback was also sacked twice by the Green Bay Packers, and the lone touchdown pass came in the fourth quarter as Webb found Jerell Adams for a six-yard reception.

Granted, teams like to see more passing-wise from a starting quarterback, but we also have to remember Webb didn’t have the usual starters at wide receiver, the offensive line is still a work in progress and he’s not played at quarterback in an NFL game since last preseason.

Hopefully the Texans won’t have to worry at all about Webb playing quarterback in 2019, but there is a lot to like about him as he can not only play quarterback, but he can also contribute to special teams when called upon like he did last season.

For a first outing of the season, Webb might have made a case that he deserves to be the top backup on the roster at the quarterback position, as A.J. McCarron is out with a broken thumb for all of the preseason.
