2. Jadeveon Clowney contract situation won’t be better

The Houston Texans have no real general manager after firing Brain Gaine this offseason, meaning where does the contract situation for Clowney stand as we are less than a full month away from the start of training camp?

One scenario is the Texans could give Clowney what he is looking for and sign him just before camp to a extension, or the franchise — and here is the prediction — will play the wait-and-see game with Clowney before they make their final decision. This being the contract year for Clowney, he’s making $15,967,200 in his one-year contract, according to Spotrac.com. In his first four seasons with the Texans, Clowney earned $22,272,998 for his rookie deal.

The issue for the Texans and Clowney with this new contract they are negotiating is the fact nobody knows what the health of the edge rusher will be because in past seasons he’s failed to play an entire 16-game schedule, including missing basically his entire first season while playing for the franchise.

Three seasons he’s missed just three games so lately the health hasn’t been much off an issue for the former No. 1 overall pick.

Going into this season, Clowney is coming off a 2018 season where he totaled nine sacks and had 21 quarterback hits, and maybe most impressive were his 16 tackles for loss. In his past three seasons, Clowney has had 16 or more tackles for loss, plus has collected 59 QB hits and 24.5 sacks.

This contract situation might be the most interesting part of training camp, as who knows what is going through Clowney’s head and what the current mindset for the Texans about the contract really is. The belief here is the Texans will do a wait-and-see approach and wait until the season is complete and a new general manager is hired before such a big decision is made for the franchise.
