Houston Texans: Who are the odd men out at tight end in 2019?

The Houston Texans have five tight ends on their roster in late June, but which players will make the final 53-man roster once the 2019 regular season begins?

With the selection of Kahale Warring in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the tight end position became a massive question mark for the Houston Texans. At the time of his selection, Houston had six tight ends on the roster. Following the draft, an off-the-field incident concerning longtime tight end Ryan Griffin saw that number become one less following his release.

The Texans now have five players at tight end, but not one has exactly stepped up and taken the reigns to the top starting spot if you look at their production from last season.

It is beyond unlikely that Houston will keep all five tight tight ends heading into the regular season as that is just too many players to have at the position. In the most likely scenario, the Texans will only keep three of their tight ends for the 53-man roster.

Entering their second year in the league, Warring is an aforementioned rookie, while Fells has five seasons of NFL experience and Adams has played two seasons, both with the New York Giants.

All of these players offer something unique to the Texans and what they are looking for at tight end. One thing is for certain and that is the roster of tight ends can’t have a repeat performance of the 2018 season on the stat sheet, because not much happened.

Last season, the trio of Griffin, Thomas and Akins combined for 727 yards and four touchdowns (all Thomas) on 61 combined receptions.

A lot needs to be answered once training camp arrives in late July, but the most important question of all for the tight ends of the Texans isn’t who will be the starter, but exactly who makes the roster?
