The Houston Texans selected Charles Omenihu in the fifth round of the NFL Draft this past April and now he’s working with defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel.

The Houston Texans have been participating in OTAs the past couple weeks, and one of the players going through that process for the very first time is fifth-round draft pick Charles Omenihu from the University of Texas.

Omenihu has the size and weight to play in the NFL as the defensive end is 6-5 and weighs 280 pounds, but there is work to be done, and one coach on the Texans — defensive coordinator/assistant head coach Romeo Crennel — spoke about the rookie defensive end earlier this week.

In transcripts provided by HoustonTexans.com, Crennel said Omenihu has work to do but could make a contribution this season:

"“Well, like I said, he’s got some height, he’s got some strength, and he’s got quickness. He can play inside and he can play outside. So, I think if he continues to work, he might have a chance to make a contribution.”"

When the Texans selected Omenihu, many from the Texans fan base were extremely excited for the value the selection Omenihu brought to the team in the fifth round, but also because he’s a player who has a lot of untapped talent and potential going into the NFL as well.

Omenihu is in a great situation by joining the Texans as he gets to work with a veteran defensive end in J.J. Watt, he’s going to be surrounded by some talented players in the front line of the Texans’ defense and he’s being coached by Crennel, who can help make Omenihu a better overall player down the line.

The defensive end enters the NFL with solid play from his collegiate days with the Longhorns. Omenihu finished with a four-year career consisting of 48 games played with 85 solo tackles (115 total) 30 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

In his senior season, Omenihu totaled 45 tackles, with 33 being solo, along with 18 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and one pass defensed.

The best part about Omenihu being on the Texans is the fact he’s not going to be expected to take over and be the leader of the defense anytime soon, and he’ll be able to take the time to put in all the work needed to make contributions for the franchise this season and for hopefully many seasons to come.
