Previewing the Houston Texans’ offensive tackle situation entering this week of the 2019 NFL Draft.
It is no secret that the Houston Texans need to improve their situation at offensive tackle. The Texans have brought in a bevy of offensive tackles throughout the draft process and could be in the market for a right tackle this Thursday in Nashville, Tennessee.
Texans re-signed offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson to a one year deal after spending the majority of the 2018 season on the injured reserve since he broke his ankle against the New England Patriots in the season opener. General manager Brian Gaine revealed at the combine that he is the projected starter in 2019 and the only viable option to anchor the right side of the offensive line with Kendall Lamm signing a two-year deal with the Cleveland Browns.
Texans have Julien Davenport and free-agent acquisition Matt Kalil as the left tackles expected to compete for the starting job. Texans also have Rick Leonard, Roderick Johnson, and David Steinmetz as offensive tackles on the roster.
Gaine could look to address the offensive tackle position early in the draft with four picks in the first three rounds. Texans have the draft assets to trade up and acquire the offensive tackle of their choice, but Gaine was confident in finding four eventual starters in his pre-draft press conference.
However, he made it clear that if a player high in their draft board was within reach, a trade could make sense to secure the rights of the player.
