Houston Texans former wide receiver will be joining the New England Patriots who are coming off winning Super Bowl LIII.
ESPN NFL Insider Field Yates has reported that the Houston Texans former wide receiver, Demaryius Thomas is signing with the New England Patriots after being waived by general manager Brian Gaine and the front office in the offseason.
Texans acquired Thomas from the Denver Broncos in the NFL trade deadline after Will Fuller was ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair an ACL tear that he suffered against the Miami Dolphins.
Unfortunately, the trade didn’t go as plan as Thomas tore his left Achilles against the Philadelphia Eagles in the second to last game in the regular season. Thomas ended his lone season with the Texans only playing in seven games and missing the playoffs game against the Indianapolis Colts. He had 23 receptions, 275 receiving yards, two touchdown receptions, and averaging 12 yards a reception.
Texans decided to release Thomas after he suffered his second Achilles injury in his career and carrying a $14 million non guaranteed cap hit for the 2019 season. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Thomas deal with the Patriots is a one year deal worth up to $6 million.
The move to sign with the Patriots makes a lot of sense for Thomas as he will be reuniting with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels who formerly served as the Broncos’ head coach. Patriots had reportedly had interest in acquiring Thomas in the previous trade deadline, but Texans ended up with the best offer on the table.
