The Houston Texans showed some of their cards on the first day of free agency and we now know the roster will look different in 2019.

Tyrann Mathieu and Kareem Jackson will no longer be in the secondary of the Houston Texans, as they both have went to other teams via free agency, both getting three-year deals for a dollar amount the Texans weren’t willing to spend on them.

Mathieu is now with the Kansas City Chiefs for the next three seasons after spending just one season with the Texans after signing with the franchise last offseason. Jackson played his entire nine-year career with the Texans since being a second round pick by the franchise in 2010. Jackson is coming off a season where he played hard at cornerback and safety, but it wasn’t near his best season with the franchise.

The Texans decided to part ways with Jackson, and though it will be different in 2019 seeing him in a different uniform, overall it is for the best of the team for the upcoming season as change can be good for both parties.

Now for the rest of free agency, what will the Texans be doing? The ensuing days will be exciting to watch and interesting to see what direction the franchise decides to go.

• In one final point for the Texans and Jackson, he said the Texans made no offer to him after playing nine seasons with the franchise. Kevin Patra of NFL.com quoted Jackson about not getting an offer:

"“They didn’t even approach me with an offer or any type of deal,” Jackson said. “Obviously, they didn’t want me back or whatever the case may be. I’m not really sure. My agent was never approached by anybody from the Texans organization …”"

The Texans should have given Jackson some sort of offer, but if it was an offer that would have been of real undervalue, maybe no offer was the best thing for both the Texans and Jackson. Again, the Texans are going in a whole new direction with the secondary and Jackson got paid by the Denver Broncos, so it was good for both sides of the situation.

Aaron Wilson of The Houston Chronicle wrote about how entering his second season safety Justin Reid will “be approaching a bigger role.”

Reid’s sophomore season is something I’m really looking for in the upcoming 2019 season as he showed as a rookie he has the talent and drive to become a solid safety in the NFL. Reid as a rookie played in all 16 games, finishing with 88 tackles, 10 passes defensed, three touchdowns and one touchdown, with the TD being a 101-yard interception return. It should be a fun season for Reid in ’19.

• On Tuesday, the Texans made a move in free agency by signing safety Tashaun Gipson to a three-year deal also reported by Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle and other media outlets. Gipson replaces Mathieu who signed with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday. Wilson wrote:

"“A former undrated free agent from Wyoming, Gipson recorded 159 tackles, six interceptions and 16 passes defensed for the Jaguars before being released this month. He was due a $7.25 million base salary in 2019.”"

This move works for the Texans as they are saving money by signing Gipson over Mathieu, but now we all wait to see what the overall results will be. Will Gipson provide the same spark as Mathieu did for the Texans secondary in ’19? That will be what everyone will want to see.
