Houston Texans re-sign wide receiver DeAndre Carter to a contract extension.

Houston Texans have re-signed wide receiver and kick returner DeAndre Carter to a contract extension after he being an exclusive rights free agent this offseason. Carter proved to be a great midseason addition after being claimed by the Texans when the Philadelphia Eagles waived him. He played a big role right away after injuries began to take a toll to the Texans wide receiver group.

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reported the move on Monday afternoon. Carter was the starting slot receiver with rookie Keke Coutee dealing with a nagging hamstring injury and the Texans kick returner with general manager Brian Gaine releasing running back Tyler Ervin to create a roster spot for him.

Carter’s versatility and athleticism were on full display in his first season as he became a reliable option for quarterback Deshaun Watson in the middle of the field. In seven games, he had 20 receptions for 195 receiving yards and averaged 9.8 receiving yards per reception.

Carter returned 16 punts for 146 return yards and an average of 9.1 yards per return. He also returned nine kicks for a total of 221 yards and an average of 24.6 yards per return.

Carter’s return bolsters the depth at wide receiver, provides another receiver capable of playing in the slot and gives the Texans a player capable of making plays on special teams as a returner. Carter will join Coutee, DeAndre Hopkins, and Will Fuller as part of the Texans wide receiver rotation moving forward.
